This doesn't guarantee that the emcee will practice your introduction or have any measure of polish, but at least you can choose the words. I felt that the emcees lacked preparation and were winging the introductions, one more noticeably than the other. The emcees don't have to be as engaging as the speakers; that's not why we are attending. If you are ever asked to give introductions or emcee an event, don't take this job lightly.

Support for Speakers

Speaking Of...

I've been up on the District stage before, once as a contest master, or emcee, and twice as a contestant in other contests. Speakers don't become successful overnight, or alone. As I enter the next round of the Toastmasters International speech contest this spring, I was reminded that as the contests get tougher, I'll need more support. The familiar faces in the audience, the emails and good wishes of those who can't be there, even the coaching of other speakers. It all counts.

The emcee referred to the world’s oldest profession. Here’s another Observational Humor monologue. The set-up information helps you understand the context of the humor. The monologue includes comments and analysis of why the humor works. THE SET-UP (What happened and what was said during the meeting before the monologue was delivered). The theme for the meeting was 9 to 5 (work and professions). A speaker was introduced as The Man, The Myth, The Legend.

Challenging Performing Conditions

Humor Power

How are the emcee and the performers before you doing with the audience? After reading the post Don’t Sing Opera To Wrestling Fans , TJ Walker writes: “Great points about venue selection. But in the case of stand-up comedy in a less-than-ideal situation, isn’t it still helpful to a speaker to go through such an experience? To ’survive’ it? Doesn’t it build confidence for when a speaker is in more ideal situations?&#. Excellent question.

The emcee was dressed in the same colored suit as Frank. Here is another Observational Humor Monologue. THE SET-UP (What was said and what happened during the meeting before the monologue was delivered.). A speaker told a story of locking her keys in the car. She had recently made a new friend, Beverly, at a Toastmasters meeting. She rode her bicycle to Beverly’s house to get help with her lock-out situation.

Getting Your Speech Off To a Good Start

Humor Power

And that’s the reason the Emcee of the Contest usually tries to warm up the audience before the first contestant speaker hits the stage. Las Vegas is a classroom for performance and presentation techniques. One of the lessons I’ve learned after watching over 200 shows is the importance of The Show Before The Show. Rarely does a Las Vegas show begin with the curtain rising on a dead stage before a lifeless audience. .

Observational Humor — Case Study #58

Humor Power

The emcee of the meeting was Pam Shinkle. Here are some examples of Observational Humor presented at the end of a meeting. Included are the set-up, the observational joke, and some comments about the structure of the joke. THE SET-UP (What happened and what was said during the meeting before the monologue was presented.). As the club President transitioned into the educational part of the meeting, she said: “And now without further ado…&#.

Public Speaking: Deliver Your Punch Line to Someone Who Appreciates You

Great Public Speaking

You can also find your punch line receiver by watching when the emcee or program coordinator talks to see who is paying attention and having fun. As a professional public speaker, you naturally want to entertain your audience, as well as inform them. Using humor as a tool to convey your message, and not strictly to elicit laughter, can take a lot of stress off a public speaker.
