Politics as Usual

Speaking Of...

Here are some thoughts on the process of choosing our President. One week until the first presidential caucus. With all the coverage all the candidates are getting, one can easily become tired of all the 'noise' they make. I see all this with a speaker's eye, and listen closely to each candidate's speaking style, as well as the message. web sites--savvy candidates realize that sound bites on the news or even debates only reach a few people.

The Power of Silence

Speaking Of...

Many speakers are uncomfortable with silence, yet it is in silence that the brain actually has a chance to slow down and process things. Theodore Roosevelt, whose family is the subject of "Mornings on Horseback." As speakers we are constantly working on the words that come from our mouths. My recent experience as a contest master, or host, of a speech contest, was a rare chance to practice silence as a communication tool. There were 11 speakers competing.

An Infinite Activity

The Arrowood Curve

Not so much making the decision as the process of considering what decision to make. I was thinking about decision making today. It struck me that when we think in the most basic, limited way, we think in yes/no, right/left, up/down options - options in front of us that everyone can see. But when we think more openly we break the frame, venture outside the borders and consider far more unique options.

PowerPoint Tip: Standard Set of Slides

Dave Paradi's PowerPoint Blog

If you are in sales, your standard set of slides would include some introductory slides, slides on each popular product or service, slides on the purchasing process, slides with customer testimonials and others that would be included in the majority of your presentations. In my PowerPoint Presentation Effectiveness System, one of the key steps is to create a standard set of slides to draw on when creating your presentations. Why is this such a good idea? Today I'll let you know.

A New Spark

Speaking Of...

After the four sessions were over we sat down together, she and I, and discussed how things went and how the process of formally preparing and rehearsing the presentation felt to her. As for all speakers, the speaking process is always a work in progress. What's more, she actually enjoyed the process, butterflies and all. The dietetic intern I coached recently finished her series of presentations to our staff.

Power Presentations: Hold Attention

Executive Speech Coach

Because our brain processes information much faster than you can speak – we will often be starving for input. Hold the attention of your listeners First be aware that you will never hold 100% of everyone’s attention. It is extremely difficult to hold 100% of the attention even when you are talking to one person. When we don’t receive enough input we daydream. So forget about holding the attention 100% of the time. Instead focus on grabbing their attention back.

Coching for Success

Speaking Of...

The process of preparation, when it is done thoroughly, requires lots of time and effort. The value of having a coach can't be overestimated. A coach helps bring out the best in you, and uncovers talents that are already there. Lynn, my colleague and friend, pictured here, has been preparing a major presentation to be given before a large group in the upcoming weeks. It's really a speaking journey.

Timing Yourself

Speaking Of...

The editing process can be exhaustive. Do you consider time in every speech or presentation you give? If you are media savvy , the answer has to be yes. Those who work in radio or television know that time is a finite resource and going overtime is the enemy. To consider: in your next presentation of any kind, rehearse your talk, timing it as you go. This will let you know right away what stays and what you throw overboard.

The Power of Visuals at the Ski Chalet

Dave Paradi's PowerPoint Blog

The kids understood this instantly and sped up the process. I went skiing with my son’s class this week and helped get the students their ski boots in the rental area. When fitting boots, the easy way to tell if the boot is too small is to check whether their toes are flat or scrunched. That’s easy with regular boost where you can push down on the top of the boot and feel their toes. But with a hard ski boot, you have to ask them.

Does Anyone Have a Powerpoint to Share?

Speaking Of...

Short cutting this process shows up in the final product--the quality and effectiveness of your speech. On the subject of 'by rote' or 'canned' presentations/slides the title of this entry says it all. The question above is one I've actually seen more than once on a dietitians' listserv. It was asked by more than one time starved speaker when he or she needed material to present to an audience.

PowerPoint Tip - Ideas for More Visuals

and they have added letter colors and symbols to further categorize the methods on the basis of process vs. structure, detail vs. overview and divergent vs. convergent thinking. I have been talking recently to more and more clients about how to get away from text or number filled presentation slides and move towards using visuals to represent the ideas we are sharing. This ranges from sales staff to finance professionals to admin assistants.

Who Looks for Motivational Speakers? Seriously?

More than PowerPoint...
