New evidence that bullet-points don’t work

Speaking about Presenting

Recent work ( Cowan 2001 ) has estimated working memory capacity to be around 4 chunks of information: 2. At last, we have some scientifically rigorous evidence to show that slides full of bullet-points don’t work. The research is the work of Chris Atherton , a cognitive psychologist. Chris recently delivered a presentation at the Technical Communication UK Conference and has put up her slides on slideshare.

Darren was the 2001 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking. In it, he chronicled his journey from a salesman of stereo speakers to a (very bad) stand-up comedian – he showed a tape of one of his early routines that was painful to watch at times – to the 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking and now a highly paid, successful speaker. Last weekend, I was in Lisbon, Portugal attending the Toastmasters District 59 Spring Conference.

Do you leave memorable messages – Darren LaCroix on originality

Craig Strachan - Keep Talking!

Here is an interesting lesson from Darren LaCroix, the 2001 world champ of speaking. Do you give your own memorable messages, or do you sound just like everybody else? He tells an interesting story: Never use someone else’s story. This is a small industry… it won’t take long for the ‘owner’ to find out. After doing my “Ouch!” speech at NSA a few years ago, it was copied by somebody overseas just a couple of months later.

What's in a Name? At Laney College, Professor Matthew Hubbard Learns a Tough Lesson

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

To me, in 2001, after my industry collapsed after 9/11, it was a shot at a comeback. Anglicizing a last name used to be an economic survival move.    Back in the early 1950s, on the Hudson County, New Jersey docks, my maternal uncle Frank Miksza did just that. It wasn't until I read my grandfather's obituary in the Jersey Journal that I found out that Uncle Frankie was going by the name Frank Mitchell.

English Not Spoken Here - Growing Up in the 1950s in Immigrant Household

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The day before my sister died in 2001, I lapsed into speaking Polish to her. The hospice nurse told me that Camille could still hear. In a sense, Polish had been our native language growing up in an immigrant family in the 1950s. At home, the adults all spoke, you got it, Polish. So, we children did also. At the neighborhood Catholic school (of course, we all went to Catholic school), we were socialized to speak only English.    That was just the way it was.
