Yesterday was a big one here at The Eloquent Woman: The Eloquent Woman on Facebook reached more than 2,000 fans, and while that was happening, I welcomed New Zealand-based presentation coaches Olivia Mitchell and Tony Burns to Washington, D.C. We visited the home of a great orator, the recently renovated Abraham Lincoln's cottage in Northwest Washington--a place where he and his family lived during the Civil War, a short commute by horseback to the White House. I spend a good part of my time coaching students from Washington High School in Sioux Falls and will spend this weekend coaching my team and judging some rounds of debate and individual events. It is the tournament that determines who gets to go to the National Debate Tournament in June.

The left-of-center British newspaper The Guardian has broken the news that beleaguered British Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid Washington, DC based West Wing Writers fees totaling $40,000 for speechwriting services. Here's a new twist: A teenage pageant that included public speaking, debate and Q&A drills as part of the competition. Best of all: It was won by a girl who had to overcome her fear of public speaking to win. She wins $2,000, to be used half for her education and half to attend a conferences on Latino issues; she'll also come to Washington, DC, to meet with senators next spring. Everything you do sends a message - everything - From another perspective, the protesters from Code Pink entered into what is also very difficult territory; A live, televised address, a crowd that is probably not thrilled with the decision to show up on stage, security, not to mention a speaker who is more than likely a much more experienced public speaker than the protesters.
All to often, when speaking, leaders know what they want to say but are not nearly as in tune with what the audience wants to hear, or is interested in. Earlier today, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein addressed the Council of Institutional Investors conference in Manhattan.

Registration is now open for the July 27 Washington Women in Public Relations professional development workshop I'll be leading on "Step Up Your Speaking: Be an Eloquent Woman." I'll share an overview of the issues women face when they want to speak up, whether in large venues or small meetings, and then we'll let the audience set the agenda--so bring your questions about how to handle public speaking skills from gestures and wardrobe to messaging and handling Q&A.
