The sweeping grand speechifying by Jack, Bobby, and Ted Kennedy has been replaced by the next generation's conversational rhetoric. 0160; It was, of course, on a plane a bit higher than the other orations, but not by much. Question: Will the old-style fire-eating rhetoric of the Southern Church also cool down?

Senator O’Toole follows this rule to a tee – his language was easy to understand, there were no voluminous words, and no never-ending thoughts.
Vocal Variety – Very effective use of both pausing (when utilized) and vocal variety to build up to a crescendo (One of my only issues with the Senator’s speech was the quickness and lack of regular pausing).
Rhetorical Questions – This is a little trickier to pull off, however O’Toole did this masterfully. Rhetorical questions are a great way to reinforce message and re-focus an audience.

People have always been influenced by "silver-tongued orators," even before Aristotle described ethos, logos and pathos as the keys to a persuasive argument. Different styles of speaking may go in and out of fashion; depending on the decade or the century, we may prefer folksy conversation over preachy cadences or "straight talk" over rhetoric, and then we go back around the other way again. According to this article , a survey on voter influences in the recent U.S. election found that "public speaking skills are back in fashion."

These orations celebrate achievement, foster hope in the face of adversity and offer the challenge to lead. Something as simple as the James Joyce quote, “Mistakes are portals of discovery,” is a good example.
· Fill your speech with other rhetorical devices, including metaphors, anecdotes, examples, quotes, rhetorical questions, vivid imagery and especially humor.
