In last week's workshop, one attendee asked about how to convey power and authority without being, well, too overpowering ...I'd I'd call it power without the "pow!" So how do you pull off powerful? Here's what works for me, both as a speaker and when I'm observing speakers If you have to tell people you are, you aren't," and I agree: Anytime you have to announce what you are, the impact of your statement is lost with your audience. Don't say you're chairing, in charge or otherwise a leader--that should be obvious from your introduction, your manner and your behavior. Control

And that type of connection is incredibly powerful. Talking about their higher objectives works in all kinds of situations, not only sales presentations and cold calls, but also internal presentations and really any situation where you're trying to persuade or influence someone. And all it takes is for you to ask that big question. Take the lead and ask them "Why?" IF YOU WANT TO BE REALLY EFFECTIVE in influencing or persuading others, it's critical that you tune into their needs, issues, and goals. But sometimes it's not enough to ask them "What's your pain?"

Do you give Power Point presentations or do you present, using Power Point slides as an aid? Power Point presentation reduces all the impact and meaning of your ideas to a one-dimensional piece of software. Since the slides are non-living, non-breathing and non-feeling, every time you equate 'presentation' with 'Power Point', you've just reduced everything you know and care about to this digital cypher.
There's a huge difference to the audience and ultimately to yourself as well.

Take a longer view : bad news feels very powerful because it is immediate and present. You want to hunker down and regroup, yet most of the time it is fresh thinking from an outsider that will most quickly and powerfully lead to making good news.
