An article in the newspaper this week referenced a communications consultant saying that flipcharts are making a comeback due to the backlash against PowerPoint. The article then gave some tips on using flipcharts. And what I found was that almost every tip was really a tip on presenting when using any visual, flipcharts or PowerPoint. This is a position I’d not heard of, so I read the tips. Tips such as not turning your back to the audience and speaking to the visual, making text big enough so the audience can read it, picking colors that have enough contrast, and using visuals

decided that I would use the flipchart as my main visual aid, but I had three PowerPoint slides that I wanted to show. didn’t rehearse with the PowerPoint slides because I saw them as such a minimal part of the presentation. Half an hour before the presentation as I sat listening to the presenter before me, I realised I had forgotten to insert black slides into the PowerPoint file (find out more about black slides ). It’s normal to get nervous about public speaking.

Interestingly enough, quite a number of speech coaches vehemently believe that your powerpoint presentation has to change too! And over the past week, they have been commenting on how powerpoint presentations of 2009 should look like. (For For the first draft, click link: PowerPoint Design 2009: Does Design Matters? )
2009 is going to be a grim year or so says the World Bank , fengshui masters and my mum.
Markets are crashing, people are losing their jobs, stress is clearly in the air.

Yesterday I had a skype conversation with Twitter follower Todd (@TJList) on how to include audience participation in a presentation. He’s presenting on getting through the economic downturn to an audience of small business owners.

Flipcharts around the room Here you want some input from the audience in the form of ideas or suggestions linked to a subject.
