I've been diagnosed with PTVD -- Post- Traumatic Venue Disorder. As you get more experienced you'll learn to use your pre-program research to recognize potentially disastrous venues before you agree to speak. But sometimes, even with the best of preparation, you get blindsided and have to present in a lousy venue. Did you ever present in a barn? How about a bowling alley?

It actually annoyed me that I had heard most of her talk before, and at the same event. I spoke at a conference last week, where the keynote speaker rehashed several significant and memorable stories that she had used the year before at the same conference, but in a breakout session. The conference attracts many of the same people year after year, as it's local and sponsored by an organization on the campus of UCSB.

I've mentioned checking your venue in advance, for one thing. Ideally, you have already asked for certain features when you booked the speaking engagement, but checking the venue also brings issues to the forefront that you couldn't anticipate. In order for you to make your speaking engagement the best it can be, you're going to have to take charge of your room. But what happens if there's something wrong with the room that needs to be fixed?

Now for the bad: • In probably 80-90% of most business and conference settings speakers have a message to give – at keynote speeches and large company events - the large audience venues. The speaker has lost control, and there is not only NOT better communication - it is far worse and more fragmented. • In this large conference/event/speech setting where the speaker has a point-of-view and a message to deliver, the speaker is responsible for the experience. Business speakers (and leaders, keynoters, politicians, Pastors and, well, everyone…) need to be aware that like it or not, Twitter is coming to their speaking experience. Be Aware, and Beware!
