"Detroit" - The Way the World Still Works

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Detroit has remained a symbol of that time of violence and looting. The police, as in "Detroit," may regard African-Americans warily or even with hostility. Kathryn Bigelow's film"Detroit" brings back the summer of 1967. It was hot. African-Americans were still treated as less-than - or worse. There were rumors of police brutality. And, no surprise, urban areas went up in flames.

Before Chapter 9: Memories of Detroit

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

But Detroit was the place even for us uptight bookish doctoral students in English to be. Years later I returned to Detroit to ghostwrite and speechwrite for the Iacocca turnaround team at Chrysler. Sure, we had to be alert.  We dined in Greek town. Like anthropologists we observed the diverse cultures: suits at the auto companies, music-star wannabes on the streets, and law and order folks making a good living.

More Detroits 1967 - What Charlottesville Could Be Kicking Off

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The film "Detroit" brought back the horror of the summer of 1967. Cities went up in flames. Stores were looted. People died. There was alleged police brutality.    Currently, the emotional and rhetorical fallout from Charlottesville might kick off the same kind of anarchy. The summer of 2017 is not over.    The immediate targets this time, reports The Wall Street Journal, could be confederate monuments.

US Auto Crash Brings Down BBDO Detroit

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Detroit has become a tough town to sell professional services, unless they have to do with bankruptcy [think Delphi].    When BBDO Detroit couldn't reach an agreement with the terms and conditions of working with Chrysler, it couldn't replace that business.  On Mediabistro.com, Matt Van Hoven reported that BBDO Detroit will be closing down on January 29, 2010.

SuperBowl: It's More Than Morning in Detroit, It's Lux

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Those of us who had worked in Detroit, whether it was the best of times or the worst of times for the auto industry, were grabbed by the throat by the Chrysler ad.  Not   And the lux didn't happen in New York or Chicago but Detroit.  9:05 P.M. New York Time.    Not only was it morning back in MoTown. It was luxury, with a touch of Eminem.      Both Chrysler and Eminem are amazing comeback tales.

Media w/o politics is Detroit w/o auto industry

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A media property w/o strong coverage of every nuance has become a type of Detroit w/o the auto industry.  With civil rights and consumerism dominating the American ethos, we all ran off to law school.    Then business became the professional darling because it became possible to become independently wealthy.    Now, politics is everything.

Boys of Detroit: Their Fantasy of a GM CEO

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

I call them Boys of Detroit, that very linear auto town that's going down for the third and perhaps last time. Yet, Boys of Detroit  and their profane followers  had a lot of ignorant chuckles over the past 24 hours, at my expense and that of marketer Julie Roehm.    Boys of Detroit are exactly the clueless strivers who never get anywhere and wind up dead in my take-down of current capitalism "The Fat Guy From Greenwich."

Detroit as 3rd world country - Can Catholic Church make a difference?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Even in its boom years, Detroit was another country.  As Detroit hangs between a number of worlds, can the Catholic Church make a difference?    For those who believe the Church as an agent of change, here is a position for digital communications leadership in the Archdiocese in Detroit.   Radical but conservative, materialistic but appreciating the style and beauty of the car, miracle-worker in lifting people into the middle class.

One Alert Woman: That's health care in mean streets of Detroit

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's all the same, really:  The health care President Obama will talk about tonight and the health care actually delivered to a boy in Detroit, Michigan.    The hospital asked CLEARCorps Detroit CCD], a nonprofit whose mission is healthy families, to prevent this.   And the powers-that-be in Detroit know lousy health care won't get by CLEARCorps.

Will the Campuses Crumble? A Dream of the Future involving Detroit, Mad Men, and Samuel Clemens

Speaking Of...

Dreams, of course, meld idiosyncratic images and mine blends Detroit, Mad Men, and the great speeches of Samuel Clemens. Perhaps they will be… However, the specter of Detroit and other post-industrial cities looms just out sight, haunting these dreams. And yet, I imagine this same assurance was felt by workers in Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee during the 1950s and 60s. Much of Pittsburgh, like Detroit, is a wasteland. Dark Comedy "Good Girls" - Renewed for 4th Season

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The plot line follows three Detroit suburban housewives from lives spent in SUVs transporting children to a life of high crime. Oddball series "Good Girls" has made it to its 4th season. That's amazing, since its ratings have been lackluster and the viewership stuck at about 2 million.  That starts out with the simple inability to make ends meet. Then it escalates into an addiction to More. Always more money is needed, right. Also, more excitement.

The Breakdown of Official Law and Order - How Vigilanti Justice Plays Out

An example of that had been Greek Town in Detroit, Michigan during the 1970s. Back then, Greek Town was an oasis of safety in the wild west of Detroit Metro area.  Jack McCoy ran a tight ship. That was in Dick Wolf's iconic television series "Law & Order." " The endings for each episode were not exactly happy-clappy. But they satisfied audiences that there was, well, law and order.

Stay-at-Home in Ohio Extended to End of April

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Detroit has been hit hard.  On the border of Ohio is hotspot Michigan.   But, the attitude of many in OH is philosophical, not anxious. It's usual to hear: Gotta die sometime. In contrast, the governor Mike DeWine is being aggressively proactive. He anticipates a surge in COVID-19 by mid this month and the peak to be in mid May. Therefore, he has extended the Stay-at-Home until the end of April.

Hillary Clinton Campaign 2016 Headquarters - Should Be Symbolic Of New Deal For America

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That makes Detroit perfect. The city of Detroit could use all the campaign spending. There is speculation, reports Maggie Haberman in Politico , that if Hillary Clinton runs for president her headquarters will be in Westchster County, New York. She lives there. And it's far enough from Media Inc. in Manhattan. Poor choice. Her headquarters should symbolize a new deal for America. Both management and workers at GM and Ford must be very nervous these days.

The Kind of Justice Which Modifies Behavior

When I was a probation officer near Greek Town, Detroit, Michigan, those in the neighborhood would gleefully report who took that five-finger discount lost those five fingers. Seared in most memories is that scene from "The Sopranos" when Tony smashes into a million pieces a car windshield. Shocking? But not to every viewer. Those who grew up in neighborhoods operated on citizen justice didn't experience that as a visual shock. Such an ethos is returning.
