Executive Communications: Big Impressions on Small Audiences

Fripp THE Executive Speech Coach

He felt that larger venues allow time for preparation. He usually walks away wondering if he has left them thinking more about his rambling communication skills than his brilliant ideas. You're right that many people are less intimidated when they prepare for a speech than when they must communicate off the cuff in more informal settings. "I'm an emergency room nurse," she said. I am Patricia Fripp, and I work in the communications department."

Can You Hear Me Up the Back?

We all know how important nonverbal communication is to presentations - facial expressions, tone, eye contact and so forth. It creates a barrier to communication and makes you look like something to be feared. Once the seats are filled, get the venue staff to add a few more at the back.

At this point, determining the best wedding venue is most important. “I’m sorry but this room is set for a meeting so you may not be able to envision your wedding but believe me, it’s really beautiful,” doesn’t cut it. I get that the room could be committed but either: tell us when we’re setting the appointment, or have actual photos loaded on an iPad or in somewhere where we can see beautiful.

Stand or sit, and why does it matter?

Speak Schmeak

When we think of public speaking, the traditional image that comes to mind is a person standing in the front of a room full of people. At conference tables, on panels, and in other small venues, it can be considered awkward to stand when speaking. However, if the panel is not on a stage, and you're seated at eye level with the audience, and there are more than 20 or 30 people in the room, then you should stand.
