Toastmasters Saturday: The New Year That Almost Wasn't

Speak and Deliver

Smart phones out, we started looking for alternate venues. Same for McDonalds, even though it had a private meeting room (the only one I''ve ever seen in a McDs, actually). What are YOUR venue horror stories, and how have you solved them - or not?

Six straightforward speeches then facing up to a problematic presentation

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

April was fairly busy for talks, beginning with an evening booking speaking about The Power of Humour in Everyday Life for the Ringwood Tuesday Club at the town's Conservative Club. Whereas the room in the Con Club in Ringwood where I had spoken the previous week was brightly-lit, the bar-room this club uses is rather less so and I had to make sure that I was speaking from a position under a light where I could see my notes (as well as being a little more visible to the audience).

The journey home wasn't great, what with long waits on a freezing platform at Clapham Junction only to find that trains were too crowded to squeeze into, then eventually boarding one where it was standing room-only all the way to Southampton - but I wouldn't have missed that talk for the world! My other booking in February was when I spoke about Patrick Campbell to Camberley and District U3A who meet at Camberley Theatre. My previous bookings were in April 2006 and September 2008.

My last booking for them had been in March 2006 and they were a very good audience on both occasions. My next booking was in Woking for a group of retired Surrey County Council staff following their AGM at the town's Trinity Methodist Church. I was met at the station by two members who acted as human sat-navs to walk me to the venue (something of a first!). This Woking booking soon led to two further talks.

Take charge of your event

Speak Schmeak

In order for you to make your speaking engagement the best it can be, you're going to have to take charge of your room. I've mentioned checking your venue in advance, for one thing. But what happens if there's something wrong with the room that needs to be fixed?

Are you worth $40K an hour?

Public Speaking Advice and Commentary

To get to that stage, a speaker at the $40K level has to have written one or more books.    And that speaker has to create the speech, rehearse it, and travel for days to hard-to-reach places in uncomfortable airplane seats to get to the venue, where she has to try to please a roomful of strangers so that the whole process can begin again.    Most of the money – a million or two – for that conference has gone to the venue, for room and board.

The Speaker’s Best Gift: Presence

Being consciously present while interacting with your fans or customers, especially in a crowded room, takes some practice. How often do we mentally check out before we've actually left the venue?

You arrive at your venue, get set up, and are ready to go on time, but the meeting starts ten minutes late. There's room for questions, for interruptions, for unanticipated circumstances. You can read all the public speaking books and blogs out there.

PowerPoint Tip: Prepare for Problems so you Respond, not React

Dave Paradi's PowerPoint Blog

If you are going to do presentations, you will at some point face a problem with the equipment, room, technology, sound system, audience, or any number of possible things that could go wrong. Look at all aspects of the presentation, from preparation to travel, to room, equipment, food and any other area that you can think of. Other mitigation strategies include using checklists for equipment and arriving at the room early enough to make changes before the audience arrives.

Secondly, I had something of a 'poacher-turned-gamekeeper' experience and became involved for several years with committee work which involved me booking speakers. Ultimately I found this a time-consuming and somewhat frustrating experience but it did provide wonderful opportunities to meet and listen to some brilliant speakers and also to compile a much-appreciated list of recommendations which I can pass on to organisations which have booked me. Venue: Hayling Golf Club.

Speaking and sport

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

Because my talks often involve anecdotes about amusing incidents that have happened at other speaking engagements, audiences usually assume that at my next booking I will be telling a story about them! In July, following my talk on My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer for Durrington WI I sat at the front of the room in the village hall while they had their business meeting. I had a double booking the next day, the morning engagement being for Odiham District U3A in Hampshire.

Sadly, the Grange Hotel in Southbourne, where I had spoken to this club and various others on numerous occasions has been demolished but Boscombe and Southbourne Probus has found a good repacement meeting place, the Liston Hotel in Boscombe, another venue where I have spoken in the past. Their venue is Shaftesbury Town Hall in a room which overlooks the iconic Gold Hill , famous for its use in various movies plus, of course, the long-running Hovis commercials.

Many give up their blogs altogether; others just restart and carry on from that point without including any retrospective material and I could do this - just write about my forthcoming engagements - but then readers would miss out on useful public speaking tips f rom many of my bookings since the end of 2009 (plus other speaker-related news and activities from this period). So I have decided to devote the next postings to all my bookings over the past 16 months.

Kidlington and District Probus President's Night, Oxford There are some bookings I really look forward to, for example, when it's a favourite type of event in an area where I know from previous experience that the audiences are very responsive and when I find myself being booked by an organiser who knows exactly what their own expectations are - and what the speaker's requirements will be - for the event.

Who's in the audience and why should I care?

Speak Schmeak

I imagine that those of you who read a lot of speaking blogs, books and newsletters tune out when you see this phrase, "know your audience." The way to do that is to find out who they are and what they want and need before you ever set foot into the venue.

Even more important, the organizers of many speaking opportunities and conferences are looking for great storytellers when they book speakers. Last year, Bill Gates talked about malaria with a big jar of mosquitoes in his lap.and opened it, releasing them in the room.)

Shawn: The one thing live events have that YouTube and Twitter cannot duplicate is the energy in the room. It’s the same material, but you’re missing the energy from everyone else in the room. Seeing a speaker in a room full of other people is more stimulating at the least, and at best, you connect with other people at the event which can lead to further discussion and maybe even accountability to help you apply the lessons taught by the speaker.

The best-laid public speaking plans can actually work very well!

The following Monday I delivered the same talk at an afternoon engagement for Haslemere U3A at a lovely old venue, Haslemere Hall. A week later I had a short-notice booking to speak on My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer to the monthly lunch club in the Clubhouse at Bramshott Place Village near Liphook in Hampshire. If it had been a Burns Supper in Scotland it would have been a different matter - but then a Scottish speaker would probably have been booked! Salisbury U3A.

As I was being introduced to present my evaluation, someone opened a door in the back of the meeting room. We couldn’t see what was causing the beeping because a temporary room-divider curtain blocked our view of the door. This happened exactly as the Toastmaster said, “And our next evaluator contestant is John Kinde.&# By the time I reached the speaking platform, someone had closed the door in the back of the room. Dear Speakers - James Duncan Davidson - James Duncan Davidson

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

A couple of the speakers that day spent all of their time talking to either the left or right side of the room and never addressed the audience. This just says to everyone in the room that you feel trapped up there. But speakers at other venues often make the mistake of writing a speech & then reading it - which is a great way to put an audience to sleep. Im dyslexic, I found learning from books hard, but did well from most lectures.
