Tribune Publishing - Financial Situation Worsens

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Tribune Publishing can't get its footing in the turbulent world of media, made much more volatile by COVID-19.   Both establishment media, such as Tribune Publishing, and digital natives like BuzzFeed, have been struggling to make money. However, the revenue model for too many is from advertising. MarketWatch reports that its Q1 net loss was $45.3 million. That's essentially 10 times what it had been a year ago - $4.7 million. Revenue declined 11.5%.

Conde Nast - Shift from Advertising to Paywall

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Will this represent a major trend in publishing? As The Wall Street Journal reports, glam publisher Conde Nast announced it is shifting to paywalls to generate enough revenue to return to profitability. More recently Conde Nast had relied on advertising for about 70% of revenue. In 2017, the publisher lost $120 million. With Google and Facebook sucking in so much advertising, it has been difficult for other publishers to earn enough from ads.

Vice Media - Its Beef About Google's Advertising Business Could Be Documented in Federal/State Antitrust Lawsuits

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Google, explains WSJ, owns the primary tool at every point in the connections among online publishers and advertisers. This reinforces contentions from online publishers such as Vice Media that Google advertising business is a source of unfair competition. Recently, Vice, along with other digital-first media such as Quartz, had to lay off staff because of the collapse of advertising revenues.

Publishing in Freefall - Vice Media Lays Off 55 in U.S.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Overall, companies are cutting back on advertising in this era of COVID-19. So, it's no surprise that, in general, publishing is suffering financially. The ads they're still placing are primarily landing on the platforms of tech media giants like Facebook and Google. Recently, BuzzFeed furloughed 19 on the editorial side, worldwide. The latest shoe to fall is this: Vice Media is laying off 55 in the U.S., mostly in its digital division.

Publishers - The Facebook Wednesday Massacre

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Eventually, one wonders how many publishers will be left standing. Even before this official move, publishers have been experiencing a significant falloff in traffic as Facebook was tilting more of its News Feed to users. Traffic, of course, converts into the price that can be charged for advertising. "Facebook is also making a feed ranking change today that literally puts its primary value that 'Friends and family come first" into practice.

LinkedIn - Self-Publish As An Influncer

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Self-publishing on LinkedIn as an Influencer is a smart career move. So valuable is this self-publishing opportunity that leaders and hustlers are now advertising for ghostwriters to create them. This could become as standard in a publicity plan as having an article published in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times has been. So, how do you start self-publishing on LinkedIn? To the right is one of the buttons you click on to "publish."

End of publishing, advertising, publicity as we've known it - Legal Services too

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The digital revolution has not only turned publishing, advertising, and publicity as we've known them on their ear.    These days I'm publishing articles on digital subjects, not on bringing pet grief out of the closet.  Those of us feeling sorry for ourselves might cheer up that we have more and more company in: Change or die.

LinkedIn Self-Publishing Could Become As Powerful As The Wall Street Journal Op-Ed

The Self Publishing Deception

Print-On-Demand (or Publish-On-Demand) books are printed as little as 1 book at a time. Thats just the publishing. Well, it costs the publisher $13 so they would be losing $7.25 That means, if your book costs $1 to purchase from the publisher, they want $5 for each book.

Trumpism - Will It Be Death of Advertising

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That's so much the situation that the panel on last night's "Gillmor Gang" speculated if Trumpism will be the death of advertising, as we know it. And, so, why purchase advertising? The technology for this shift away from advertising is already in-place. There are self-publishing platforms Twitter, LinkedIn News and Pulse, Facebook including Live, Medium, SnapChat and blogs. So, where does that leave advertising?

The profitable world of self-publishing

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

The question facing me now was who would be chosen from among thousands of publishers to bring my masterpiece to the waiting, eager multitudes. After many submissions to numerous publishing houses and many rejection slips, I finally found one who agreed to publish my book.

Prevention - Can it make it without ad pages?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In 2015, the media outlet Prevention, published by Rodale, had a 14% uptick in advertising pages. But Rodale has still made the decision to terminate advertising. Of course, advertisers want their commercial messages in a media property like Prevention. And a 34% downturn in print sales. To shore up that move, reports the New York Post , it is raising the cover/subscription price and laying off about 20 employees. That will be in May.

Native advertising. " Publishers love it because it brings in revenue. Kelly reports in the New York Post , right now Conde Nast's decision to allow native advertising is controversial. Baby Boomer public relations players remember the time way back when the head of Mobil's public affairs, Herb Smertz, did this kind of advertising in influential media such as The Wall Street Journal.

At stake was advertising revenue. The board of directors over-ruled them in the matter of publishing a piece about a Conde Nast executive who had solicited gay sex when in Chicago. The value of good taste won at Gawker. This seemed more a business decision than an editorial one.  That meant the survival of the media property in a Darwinian marketplace. In this show-down, two editors at Gawker lost.
