On Promoting Books

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

On Promoting Books Books do not sell themselves; people sell books. If your book fails to sell, you did not know your market. Review copies are the least expensive and most effective way to promote books. It is easier to promote one book twice than to write a new book. The secret to successful publishing is not to publish more and more books, but to effectively market those books already published.

Communication Steroids

by Tim 'Gonzo' Gordon on December 29, 2009 It’s our last podcast of 2009 – and by our admittedly somewhat uneven counting, it’s our 128th overall podcast, not counting special interviews or repeats. This time around, we discuss personal and corporate branding – and take a look at a recent BNET article on bad brand moves of 2009 – and there were a bunch of them.

Positioning/Promoting Your Book: That Online Video Trailer

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"About 90% of your book's success is how effectively you position and promote it."   I add: This even applies to brandnames who publish books.    Unless they're willing to take that second step of positioning/promoting, they shouldn't waste their time, hope and money on publishing a book, whether it's through the traditional agent route, a self-publishing service, or do-it-yourself PDF e-book.

Top 7 Ways to Select a Book Topic That Sells

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

Top 7 Ways to Select a Book Topic That Sells Write what you are passionate about. Your book is an extension of you, your talks, and your profession. One big mistake authors make is to put attention on writing another book before their first one has been promoted. Read other authors’ books in your field, check out related web sites, and subscribe to newsletters. Write a book your audience needs or wants. Business books sell well.

Public Speaking Humor: Ads

Great Public Speaking

Jay Leno has a series of books called Headlines I, II, and III. Besides having really funny headlines from newspapers and magazines, the books have lots of blooper advertisements along with commentary from Jay. You can read these aloud in your public speaking engagements without worry of copyright infringement. Be careful not to violate copyrights Learn To Be Funny Onstage! You can concoct fake ads, or use real ads that are funny in your public speaking engagements.

Library of Congress & Digital - Is there a gap?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Had I violated some author's copyright?    The caller alluded to an ebook I had submitted for copyright.    The issue was:  In order to receive a copyright the book has to be "sold" or "published."    The implication was that a book would not have been sold or published on Christmas Day. Tonight I returned to my office from a client's appointment at about 7:00 PM, New York time.

Storynappin’ Varmints

Can You Hear Me Up the Back?

I’ve seen lots of speakers, professional and amateur, relating stories in the first person that you know they picked up from someone else on the circuit or read in someone else’s book. There’s no copyright on spoken stories, but stealing is immoral and the bad karma will catch up with you at some point. I heard a radio phone-in segment the other day, in which callers related tales of having their stories stolen by other people. There seems to be a lot of it about.

Ghosts of Catholic-Girls Christmases Past

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A few Christmases ago I self-published my book "Our Emotional Intelligence"  Download CUsersjasneDocumentsjg.  I dated the publication day December 25, 2007 and sent it to the Library of Congress for copyright.   "She will get a ring." " "Last year she came back from Christmas with vestiges of a black eye.    Her father is a drunk, you know."

The Self Publishing Deception

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

Everyone wants their books inside Borders or Barnes and Noblebut its just not possible. Print-On-Demand (or Publish-On-Demand) books are printed as little as 1 book at a time. This means their unit price to print and buy is higher per book. The book costs about $15.

How authors can endure the promotional process

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

More often than not, you have to convince an occupied public that the book you spent months, perhaps years writing, is actually worth spending $14.95 This becomes more difficult for authors who dont have the means of getting their books marketed to the masses.

Exquisitely Great Marketing Plus Lousy Follow-up Equals NO SALE.

My hesitation was partly that I was booked on one of them, and partly from my interest in seeing how far they would go to actually get a sale. I didn’t like their inflexibility in their willingness in booking ONLY their one or two available dates.
