As public speakers, we all have our own " voice " -- a style, a persona that is uniquely our own. Conscious focus on developing that voice serves to enhance our credibility and help us establish rapport with our audiences.
One of the roles we frequently fulfill, as public speakers, is using our unique voice to become a voice for others. The "others" may be constituents, employees or those with less power and marginalized rights.
As a tip of the hat to St. Patrick's Day , my own Irish heritage and Women's History Month , I'd like to salute Mary Robinson

And any amount of time the questioner is speaking, the audience is really wanting to hear the main attraction. Worse for Williams, being seated might just be the last position a CEO should be in when speaking--it diminishes your authority, and even more important, your energy , which starts to slip 10 minutes into the session when you're seated. (That The surprise element of one important person standing up to speak is like catnip for audiences--he might say or No one would have bet on this, but by all accounts, yesterday's SXSW keynote by Twitter CEO Ev Williams flopped.

Public speaking comes with a lot of assumptions baked into it--forms, formats and formalities that have been used over and over again for centuries. Here's the basic recipe: Someone, the expert, strides to the front, gets introduced, stands behind a lectern on a raised platform and speaks for 30 minutes to an hour, perhaps taking a few audience questions at the end, but only if time permits. Here are the six ingredients People in the audience listen, and clap at the beginning and end. There might be handouts to take away with more information, or business cards.

Fear of public speaking often feels like it hits you out of nowhere. I’m using a common brain model to explain these different causes of speaking anxiety. But I think it’s a useful model which may help you understand your fear of public speaking and work out the best way to reduce it.
But I’m going to suggest that there are three distinct causes of speech anxiety.
The model classifies parts of the brain based on when they developed in evolutionary history, hence the Old Brain, the Mid Brain and the New Brain.

And if he could only talk and write on a flip chart, I’m sure he’d be a great public speaker. And I won’t bother describing the foul and prodigious “gift” he left for us in the basement on Thanksgiving morning last year. Like Balou, great public speakers understand that you can overcome mistakes with connection. My dog Balou is a 60-pound, black-lab mix that we adopted at a PetSmart rescue day last year in Sandy Springs. That’s because he understands how to connect with people better than most humans.

Whenever I read a top 10 presentation or public speaking tips post, I often find at least one tip that makes me cringe. By speaking to yourself in this way you’re putting pressure on yourself to perform. If you naturally speak fast and try and follow this advice, you’re likely to lose some of your energy. And I’m not talking about the obviously stupid presentation tips like “Imagine the audience naked” or “Look at the back of the room”.
So here’s my list of the top 10 tips presentation tips that you should not follow.
