Drawing on examples from President Obama's press conference last night on health care reform, here are some ways to create credibility.
Tone and Manner
He began with a brief summary of the state of the economy, including statistics of job losses and financial collapses. Connie was the recipient of the first facial transplant in the United States, and bravely faced cameras for the first time yesterday. I was deeply moved watching this press conference yesterday, and spoke to a number of folks who were as deeply moved, including a dear friend whose young daughters cried after watching it, and volunteered, on their own, that they would never tease anyone or stare at someone who looked different, ever.

While it may be true that not every talk needs slides (State of the Union for one), slides do help certain types of talks. As a former winner of Washington Women in Public Relations' "Washington PR Woman of the Year" award, I got to relax at this annual luncheon today and listen to keynoter Helen Thomas, a 57-year veteran of the White House Press Corps, first woman officer of the National Press Club, winner of the International Women's Media Foundation lifetime achievement award and the first woman member and president of the White House Correspondents' Association. As a former journalist and current public relations practitioner, I appreciated her acknowledgement of what the two professions have

She was the first woman to speak in front of a national convention, to write a syndicated column, to earn money as a lecturer, to be a radio commentator and to hold regular press conferences. Goodwin notes that when Eleanor came outside to tell reporters of her husband's death, she told them "the story is over," as if she could never give them anything else to cover on her own. It was in this era that she led the United Nations efforts to develop a human rights declaration, and published, wrote and spoke most prolifically.
