I edited some of it for brevity's sake. "No matter how much you prepare, something might, and probably will, go differently from how you had planned. Nobody prepares like Steve Jobs. The key difference, aside from the fact that he prepares more than anyone out there, is that while Steve Jobs strives for perfection, he doesn't expect it. I've written a post about being the perfect presenter before, but while reading "The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs" by Carmine Gallo , I read a great excerpt about Steve's perfection, or rather lack thereof, that I wanted to share with you.

The first draft of the book is done , and to help get there I read over 50 books on public speaking. Dale Carnegie got much of it right 50 years ago in Public Speaking for success (one of the best I read - I’m surprised too). As great as Stanislavski’s An Actor Prepare’s is (he’s the guy who originated method acting), can you be a great actor from reading it? Many popular ones, old and new, as well as books by preachers, teachers, salesmen, infomercial stars, and professors. What did I learn?

Cam Beck asked me this question the other day in response to my post about your worst public speaking fear coming true : "So how do you know the difference between preparing and over-preparing?" First of all, here's what it looks like to be unprepared . Also, here's a post I wrote about how I prepare for a presentation . I've read lots of articles that say you can never be too prepared, or that it's better to over-prepare. I

It’s normal to get nervous about public speaking.
Public speaking involves risk. Here are three specific ways in which you can use your fear of public speaking to make you a better public speaker and presenter.
Let your fear of public speaking motivate you
When you stand up in front of people and open your mouth, you’re making yourself vulnerable. So aiming for zero fear is unrealistic.

Many people think that this type of visualization can help you not only speak better but also help reduce your fear of public speaking.
It may make you feel good at the time, but the scientific evidence doesn’t support the belief that it will help you achieve your best performance or reduce your fear of public speaking.
preparing your presentation
But there are other types of visualization that can help you in both these areas.

I've talked about this tip before, but ran into the same situation again this month while doing a public speaking engagement in Morocco. The manager of the gigantic ballroom could not speak English and because of tight scheduling of other events, I was not able to be in the room early as I always am. I am ALWAYS prepared for total equipment failure and went on with the program without hesitation. The primary languages there are Arabic and French. Just arranging for an overhead projector was very difficult.

I speak publicly often, and I still get nervous prior to every speech or presentation. That being said, I’m in pretty good company — it has been noted that Sir Winston Churchill and President Lincoln also got quite anxious prior to speaking publicly.
Unfortunately, no matter how many books, courses, DVDs, websites or snake oil salesmen promise to “cure” you of your fear of public speaking, it is never that simple, or that easy. Man, I wish it was that easy. Every single one.

When some people speak, they grip the podium as a way to steady themselves and their speech. In another study, another group of Columbia scientists watched a series of polished professional lecturers and undergraduates speaking, and noticed that both types of speakers rarely came down with a case of the “um, ah and er” when they gestured. The next time you’re preparing for a speech, watch what your hands do as you talk. Coyote and Roadrunner were the original action heroes. You’ve got the falling anvils, the rocket cars, the exploding kegs of TNT, and anything else Coyote
