I had lunch with a colleague last week and we had a rousing discussion about two different approaches to teaching public speaking and presentation skills.
My company, DeFinis Communications , approaches the training process from a skills perspective. We teach the techniques, behaviors and skills that are associated with powerful and effective public speaking —and we do it with a proprietary coaching Once those fundamentals are in place, our clients get stronger and more confident so they are able to take risks and let their personalities shine on a solid and reliable base of skill.

I'm so glad you all asked me to speak to you today, because I think I may have some insights you might find useful about my experiences as a woman in our industry. Being a woman in our industry is like being a vacuum cleaner: It sucks. One problem many scientists encounter: They're trained to describe to colleagues all the exceptions, competing ideas and potential for error in their statements about their research....but Let me tell you why. Which one of those opening lines would you have chosen, if you were giving a speech or presentation?

However, if you do not have the time to take the prepared comments, introduce your own thoughts, and re-write sections in your own words and language, you are better off not speaking at all.
To Entrepreneurs : It is understandable that you are nervous, have a lot of information to convey, and have written it down in order to ensure that you are able to introduce every concept you feel is necessary. Invest the time in practice and preparation . I spent an interesting(and frustrating) two days last week- the first watching a number of legislative hearings, and the second watching a number of presentations/pitches before venture capitalists and private equity groups.

If you're not ready for a prime-time slot as a speaker , but still want to get some practice, try these smaller stepping stones on your path toward public speaking: Ask a question when someone else is speaking. As an audience member asking a question, you have the goal of getting the speaker to speak more, rather than yourself. Not ready for a keynote speech, big presentation, commencement address? Finding it hard to get booked for a speech or get on the program at a conference?

People felt like I was speaking directly to them (and I was).
Below on the left we’re practicing at the Decker offices and the photo on the right has me utilizing big gestures by workin’ the How Conference crowd:
She’d absconded a tape from my speaking engagement at FWE&E and queued it up to the Q&A session. Spending the day at Decker was delightful. Shortly after arriving, the transformation of my delivery techniques was well underway.

His message – clear, consistent, and easy to comprehend, and he won.
Killer App # 2 – No Practice. Having the benefit of a communications trainer is priceless, but often not in a startups budget. Practice does not cost anything other than time. Every person benefits from practicing before presenting.
There are two communication “killer apps” that I witness plague startups with frightening frequency. These danger zones are lethal to a startup, especially one seeking funding.

They say “practice makes perfect.” It means spending hours in pursuit of perfection, putting in the 10,000 hours that Malcolm Gladwell speaks about in his book, The Outliers .
The only way to improve your competence at something as important as public speaking is to practice. But here’s the real secret: it isn’t enough And in fact, repeating an action over and over again is the single biggest factor in acquiring skill. The wisdom is to practice the right skills in the right way so that what you learn is truly of value.
