However, if you do not have the time to take the prepared comments, introduce your own thoughts, and re-write sections in your own words and language, you are better off not speaking at all.
To Entrepreneurs : It is understandable that you are nervous, have a lot of information to convey, and have written it down in order to ensure that you are able to introduce every concept you feel is necessary. Invest the time in practice and preparation . I spent an interesting(and frustrating) two days last week- the first watching a number of legislative hearings, and the second watching a number of presentations/pitches before venture capitalists and private equity groups.

For many of us (including me for many years), there’s no practical impediment - it’s just our lack of confidence that holds us back.
In particular, lack of confidence holds us back from taking opportunities to speak in public. Speaking enhances your career . I first wrote this post in a state of great excitement when I first saw Susan Boyle singing on Britain’s Got Talent. Three days later, the YouTube video has gone viral round the world and I’ve had time to reflect a little more on what the phenomena of Susan Boyle means to us as presenters.

Whenever I read a top 10 presentation or public speaking tips post, I often find at least one tip that makes me cringe. By speaking to yourself in this way you’re putting pressure on yourself to perform. If you naturally speak fast and try and follow this advice, you’re likely to lose some of your energy. And I’m not talking about the obviously stupid presentation tips like “Imagine the audience naked” or “Look at the back of the room”.

Killer App # 2 – No Practice. Having the benefit of a communications trainer is priceless, but often not in a startups budget. Practice does not cost anything other than time. Every person benefits from practicing before presenting.
There are two communication “killer apps” that I witness plague startups with frightening frequency. These danger zones are lethal to a startup, especially one seeking funding.
