Even more important, the organizers of many speaking opportunities and conferences are looking for great storytellers when they book speakers. The good news: Some of the best venues for public speaking are not only creating opportunities to speak, but sharing the results so you can learn and practice online. Here are three of my favorites you can add to your practice arsenal: TED.com , the website of the famous TED Can you tell a great personal story? It's one of the most effective ways to get--and hold--your audience's attention.

One of my favorite talks at the last Seattle Ignite was Jason Preston ’s talk called “Goodbye Tolstoy: how to say anything in 140 characters”. He does so many things right in his ignite talk, and did it with such confidence, I interviewed him for his take on public speaking - which is below:
What about public speaking is fun or enjoyable for you?
SB: It seemed like you had fun giving your presentation? JP: So many things about public speaking are fun for me.

There’s this popular format for public speaking called Ignite - It’s an evening of short talks with some special rules. I’ve spoken at 5 different ignite events (Ignite Seattle x3, Gnomedex, Ignite Boston) and make much of my living from public speaking - here’s my advice on this special format:
This is super short, which means it’s easy to practice . Similar to, but simpler than, Pecha Kucha , and more involved than lightening talks , in ignite each speakers gets 5 minutes - but must have 20 slides and each slide must automatically progress in 15 seconds.
