Lady Liberty Symbolizes All That’s Right about the United States in a Uniquely Powerful Way This year, in the weeks before 9/11, I started to think about what I believe is the most powerful symbol of all that is right about the United States, not just for Americans but for people around the world. In the days of the great ocean liners and before the dominance of air travel, she gave a warm symbolic welcome to the United States. For those who stutter, this research is big news: Three genetic mutations have been identified in the brains of people who stutter, located in the part of the brain where speech is controlled. From the CNN story: Roughly 3 million people in the United States stutter, according to the National Institutes of Health. It's not a cure, and may not be the only cause, but finding any source for stuttering is what's significant, researchers say. About 60 percent of those with the disorder have a family member who also stutters.
