You need to check the microphone to make sure it works. You need to check to see how far your mouth should be from the microphone. If the amplifier controls aren't handy after you have started, you can adjust the sound by changing the distance between your mouth and the microphone and/or increasing or decreasing the loudness of your voice. If you are speaking in any venue that is larger than an average sized classroom or conference room, I strongly suggest using a microphone to prevent vocal strain. There are two types of microphones you are likely to encounter. This type of microphone usually has a battery pack, which you attach to your waistband, allowing you to move about freely. The first is a lavaliere mic that clips to your lapel or collar. When wearing a lavaliere, speak conversationally with the same amount of volume and vocal projection you would use to address a small group.

We'll be working on their elevator speeches in class tomorrow, as well as their microphone skills. It's probably a good idea to use a microphone if there are more than 30-40 people in a room, but it depends on the venue. The microphone should be close to the speaker's mouth, but not too close. Tomorrow I'll be spending the day providing mini-coaching sessions to the soon-to-be graduates of Women's Economic Ventures ' Self-Employment Training program. At graduation, each student gives her elevator speech onstage.

There aren’t enough microphones . If the goal is a lively conversation, everyone has to have their own microphone. Sitting in the audience, waiting for the microphone to be passed between people…. The moderator should be skilled at audience Q&A and editing rambling, or poorly constructed, audience questions. Most training conferences in most industries resort to what’s called a panel session. This is where 3 to 5 experts get up on stage and each one, in turn, bores the audience to death.

simple, but important, touch is the use of a wireless lavaliere microphone on your interviewee’s lapel. Rather than use a camera microphone of questionable quality, you can improve sound quality dramatically by investing just a few hundred dollars. Unless you are skilled in each of the five previous elements, seriously consider hiring an outside expert. When I read this post, I thought, "That's just exactly what I wanted to say about improv skills!" (I've added links and some boldfacing to emphasize a few points.) With these lessons in mind, what would you do if the PowerPoint is down for the count, the microphone is on the fritz, and the Jeep outside your window just won’t quit? ...Tags: Editor's note: I'm delighted to repost with permission this guest post from the excellent blog of speaker coach Angela DeFinis, who works in California's Silicon Valley and Bay Area.
