At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It’s much more powerful than those young whippersnappers–Twitter and Facebook

Social media marketing is a trend, not a fad. We have just written about a powerful new research study that paints a picture of how thousands of smart companies are already benefiting from the inclusion of social media. What’s clear from that research is that when we evaluate social media, we are not talking about the marketing longevity equivalent of the hula hoop or the Lambada.
But, most small to medium-sized businesses have yet to participate fully and enthusiastically.
Social media marketing is here to stay.

The Internet and social media changed everything, as we know. Clay Shirky , author of Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations , has a new TED talk that is not just appropriate for our times in general, but given what is happening in Iran, it's actually perfectly poignant for this particular week. For generations communication was one-to-one or one-to-many — the one-to-many being largely the domain of the professionals.

Their research, 2009 Business Social Media Benchmarking Study makes it clear that even small business owners need to take social media very seriously indeed.
