In preparation for her talk she asked me if there would be a way to reproduce an exercise called “Speaker & Audience Mapping” that she usually leads in the slideology workshops . Now, we expected a large crowd (we had over 200 attend this workshop) and we knew that asking a large audience to shout out ideas in a giant Moscone hall just wouldn’t work. Conference Last month Nancy Duarte spoke at Web2.0 Expo and it was a huge success.

was interested in Bill’s observation about modern conference events:
“With the pervasiveness of wireless hot spots and laptops that have built-in wireless capability, conference audiences have turned keynotes into multitasking events, half-listening to presentations while simultaneously answering email and browsing the web.” cannot tolerate laptops and phones in use during workshops and other highly participative learning events – it’s an insult to all concerned, and if you as facilitator don’t deal with it, other members of the group surely will.

So the next time you present at a conference, instead of being confronted by a sea of faces looking at you, you may be phased by a sea of heads looking down at their laptops. On the other hand, when I see people taking notes (manually or with their laptops) I am encouraged. While the back channel gets to connect with their circle as they sit in a roomful of people they don’t know, they may be missing the opportunity to meet new people sitting around them. Though this list is geared towards one-hour sessions rather than panels and workshops, some of the same principles apply. When I travel to deliver customized workshops or speak at conferences, I carry the normal equipment for a presenter: my laptop, presentation remote and projector if required. I know all of these are perfectly OK to carry on an airplane since I regularly have my laptop bag searched when going through security. It allows me to move my laptop away from a podium or projector. In today’s tip, I want to share with you a few of the other pieces of equipment I carry that come in handy when travelling. The first item I carry is a VGA extension cord.

I am planning to buy a new laptop next year after the new Core i7 chipset comes to laptops. still plan to load both versions and run one of them via a virtual machine as I do now so that I can demonstrate the proper version in my workshops. One question I am struggling with is whether to load the 2007 or the 2003 version as my primary Office version. I

In many workshops, people often point out that they can’t select the background color because their organization mandates a certain template or look. Laptop and flat screen monitors are far brighter than projectors and give you a distorted perception of how much contrast two colors have. Recently I commented on a blog post regarding colors that are used on slides. The writer had made some suggestions on colors to use or avoid based on the color wheel used by graphics professionals.
