No one would have bet on this, but by all accounts, yesterday's SXSW keynote by Twitter CEO Ev Williams flopped. It's poignant here, because so many thousands of people looked forward to this keynote as a highlight of the interactive conference--even Gray's piece is titled, "The SXSW Keynote With Ev Williams You Had Hoped to See." His long wishlist for the talk indicates that would-be attendees came there--as most audiences do--with many questions they'd hoped the speaker would answer. Louis Gray sums up what happened succinctly: After thousands of Twittering geeks and quasi-geeks alike had settled in to the packed exhibition hall and overflow rooms to hear the latest updates delivered straight from Twitter's leader, their excitement soon turned to boredom and finally, severe annoyance, as the interview's pace, tone and content fell well below expectations .

Because of Bart's achievements, he's been invited to give a keynote at his company's next conference, and in reviewing his accomplishments, he has pinpointed four main steps in the process that helped him get to where he is today. In working with Bart on his keynote, it has occurred to me that these are principles that would benefit just about anyone who wants to reach higher, grow in their business or better themselves in any area, including public speaking. Download audio here. I have a client, Bart Baker , who has grown a successful insurance office over the past 22 years or so.

would love to see more tools available which work within the most common slideware – PowerPoint and Keynote. Crafting a set of tweets for the main points of your presentation and then tweeting them as you make those points in your live presentation is a great way to be part of the Twitter conversation.
Both Keynote and PowerPoint have add-ins which allow you to automatically send a tweet when you click on a slide. Presenting while people are tweeting is challenging – but also adds a new dimension to the presentation experience for your audience. Gradually tools are being developed

What about Keynote users?
It’s called Keynote Tweet and works in much the same way.
And you can make it easy for your audience to retweet the main points of your presentation (make sure your tweet is easily retweetable by allowing space for “RT @yourusername” within the 140 characters).
In my post 10 tools for presenting with Twitter , I lamented that there was no easy-to-use way of posting tweets from within PowerPoint. Timo Elliott of SAPWeb2.0

Taylor uses some slides and one prop (an actual human brain), but mainly she lets her emotions out and tells her story in an honest, sincere way. Who says you can't speak well to 200 PowerPoint/Keynote slides? TED has earned a lot of attention over the years for many reasons, including the nature and quality of its short-form conference presentations. All presenters lucky enough to be asked to speak at TED are given 18-minute slots maximum (some are for even less time such as 3- and 6-minute slots).

There is absolutely no reason in the world you should use anything other than Keynote . There is an astounding difference (not an exaggeration) between the tools, canvas placement, typographic control, and overall aesthetics in Keynote compared to PowerPoint. Once you become familiar with Keynote, which isn’t an arduous process, the productivity and just plain enjoyment you’ll experience using it over PowerPoint is completely worth any switching costs. 20 tips for better conference speaking ~ 16 February 2009 ~ View from on stage as I’m preparing to speak at An Event Apart New Orleans 2008.

There's got to be a reason to get out of bed every day. Eat Wisely (4) Drink a little (wine) everyday. (5) Eat mainly plant-based foods. Again, it looks like we have to educate many presenters on the basics of preparing to communicate a message. Non-professional graphics and use of animation While these areas were covered partially by the main question on the survey, the third most popular area of comments dealt with the graphics and animation that makes the presenter look silly. As I said recently in a keynote presentation at a conference, the single biggest issue I face (and every presentation professional faces) is convincing presenters that they need help. I’ve already reported on what audiences find most annoying based on the survey completed by 548 people.

Right now the “Twitter factor” in speeches is microscopic, mainly confined to a scattering of techie conferences. This will be more true of workshops, training and breakout sessions vs big keynotes. But even in keynotes, I see Twitter coming into play.
