Dont Abuse Visuals: Use visuals only when they are needed because they can distract your audience - This is like a dagger to my heart. The KEY to an effective presentation is the use of visuals. If you want to ensure your main points are remembered by the audience, using visuals is the BEST way. Recently I stumbled upon a 2007 blog post from Neil Patel at QuickSprout.com . It was entitled "The Lazy Man's Way to Building a Great PowerPoint Presentation." I have to say, I found myself disagreeing with most of it...so

Tip: I'm a big fan of Flickr instead of iStock) Image searching is a tedious and frustrating endeavor. And with Seth's words the slides became a perfect visual backdrop.
This is Part 2 of a 3 part series, wrapping up my thoughts about Seth Godin's Linchpin Session in NYC on Friday, January 15th.
On Friday, January 15th, I was lucky enough to join my wife ( @weddingistas ), Emily ( @emilyspearl ), Susan ( @trueblindfaith ), and David ( @davidwakeman ) for Seth Godin's Linchpin Session in New York City.

It's no secret that I think visuals should dominate words in a presentation where any type of slideware is used. But if the word 'visuals' immediately makes you think 'pictures' or 'photographs', reconsider. for the last 5 years or the number of pieces in different packages of M&M candy. Like whitespace in visual design it’s the pauses that make what you do say stand out clearly. Search flickr using the advanced options to show you creative commons images. There’s this popular format for public speaking called Ignite - It’s an evening of short talks with some special rules. Similar to, but simpler than, Pecha Kucha , and more involved than lightening talks , in ignite each speakers gets 5 minutes - but must have 20 slides and each slide must automatically progress in 15 seconds.

Want to use a FlickR image into your presentation? Each of the cloudware apps I used let you search and add unique FlickR images with the same ease you'd have inserting a stale piece of clipart to a PowerPoint presentation. Easy access to fresh videos and pictures can make your presentation more visually unique and compelling than sticking to the over-used, cliched, packaged stock images and clip art built into standard software. Yes, you can design a PowerPoint presentation without using PowerPoint. And you don't need Keynote or OpenOffice, either.

Why not do the presentation directly from slideshare, after pointing the audience to it, so they can follow the slides on their laptop (better for the neck ! ) while twittering. Daiv Russell February 23, 2009 It’s very intriguing how the the presenter feels that they “own the show”, and must have 100% visual concentration from the audience, failing to realize that greater back-channel participation is actually greater immersion
