Your political views aside, Sarah Palin's use of notes written in the palm of her hand over the weekend--caught by cameras--adds a whole new layer to our discussion of whether you need notes or not when you speak. This Los Angeles Times columnist hits the nail on the head for most speakers: Most of us need some help when we speak in public. In high school, The rules allowed you to use an index card with a maximum of 50 words of notes, but my teammates and I prided ourselves on our ability to wing it without a card. (This This worked against me at one speech tournament, when

Every speaker has a choice when it comes to her words, and I've been wondering about whether speakers prefer speech texts, extemporaneous speaking or something in between. Over on The Eloquent Woman on Facebook , I asked readers: "Speakers, do you prefer to use a written speech, just notes or speak extemporaneously? And it seems our readers (so far) have a slight preference for Tell us what you do and whether it works for you." Here's what you said: Angelina Seraphina Belmonte said her preference is to "Speak extemporaneously." Clarissa Lester Kenty said,

You may tell yourself you're no good at speaking--or succeed one time and do poorly another, for reasons that escape you. Extroverts like to think while they talk, which can be a plus and a minus when speaking extemporaneously (they're fluid, but may need to edit themselves on the fly). You can be a great public speaker either way, but to prepare well, you need to know your personality preferences. But if you haven't taken the time to think through factors like your personality type, gender and how you handle anxiety, you won't really know . Before you work on skills

President Obama is no longer the premier communicator - which is remarkable as he was elected largely because of his speaking ability. First of all he is over exposed - speaking somewhere almost daily:
No President, nor perhaps any public figure in history, has relied on continuous scripting of what he says as has this President.
I even named him as #1 in my Top Ten Communicators of 2006.

Public speaking involves so much more than just standing in front of a crowd and talking. So before you stand up to speak, make sure you choose the correct delivery method that will give you the best results for you and your audience.
In these highly formal situations accuracy is extremely important because every word will be analyzed by the press, the public and the audience. When it comes to delivering your presentation, you actually have many choices. How you deliver your thoughts and message can depend on a number of factors, such as your comfort level,

A number of high-profile presentation bloggers and authors have commented recently on Barack Obama’s speaking style - when he doesn’t have his teleprompter in front of him.
Barack Obama, whose superior speaking skills undoubtedly contributed to his ascent to the presidency, is known to lapse into unwords whenever he departs from his trusty teleprompter and speaks extemporaneously.

In interview settings particularly, and other informal communication situations he has a lot of non-words (ums and ahs) and his eyes cast down more often

Fond as I am of trying new devices for speakers , I know that most speakers come to phases in their learning that require a major shift: from speaking as one of many in a meeting to a solo talk, from small groups to large audiences, from scripted to extemporaneous, or from low-tech to high, as in audioconferencing, incorporating online resources or using a teleprompter. This weekend, the New York Times looked at presidential candidate John McCain's struggles with more than one such speaker transition , as he moves to more scripted talks from his usual off-the-cuff style,

Young speakers in Britain are amidst an American Idol-style competition called "The Speaker," which poses weekly challenges (be a newscaster, speak to the nation, be a tour guide, speak extemporaneously and more) and offers speaker-mentors in the form of vocal, body language and other coaches. The competition, for 14-to-18-year olds , has a great website with a special page devoted to helping you improve your speaking. Unfortunately, the ample video examples on the site won't work if you're not in the United Kingdom, so try the audio instead.
