Every speaker has a choice when it comes to her words, and I've been wondering about whether speakers prefer speech texts, extemporaneous speaking or something in between. Over on The Eloquent Woman on Facebook , I asked readers: "Speakers, do you prefer to use a written speech, just notes or speak extemporaneously? Here's what you said: Angelina Seraphina Belmonte said her preference is to "Speak Tell us what you do and whether it works for you." And it seems our readers (so far) have a slight preference for speaking without text or notes --but are ready to switch it up

While the moderation requires extemporaneous speaking, the panel introductions did require a text--and gave me a good test opportunity . In this case, our venue had a nice spotlight trained over the reading surface of the lectern, and it was midday. Move away from the lectern and into the crowd as much as possible. Fond as I am of trying new devices for speakers , I know that most speakers come to phases in their learning that require a major shift: from speaking as one of many in a meeting to a solo talk, from small groups to large audiences, from scripted to extemporaneous, or from low-tech to high, as in audioconferencing, incorporating online resources or using a teleprompter. And, of course, most people define eloquence as the ability to speak extemporaneously in roll-off-the-tongue, smooth-sounding sentences--words that go beyond basics to flourishes and turns of phrase that make us pause and listen, and that move us to a place beyond our daily lives. Ums and their near equivalents can increase when your hands are immobilized (clasped, gripping a lectern or just in your pockets) and in general, suggest a need to anticipate questions and prepare answers--nothing more sinister, stupid or suggestive. This will provide a game film enabling you to see and hear yourself as your audience will see and hear you. From the videotape you will learn if you are shifting from one side to the other, or grasping the lectern so your knuckles are white from pressure. When you are called on at the last minute to make a short presentation, this card file can be a lifesaver and a career-enhancer, as you can quickly build a new presentation around one or two old questions.
