One popular model since the 1960s has revealed itself to be consistent in accurately predicting the behaviour of those groups. In communities of practice, virtual action learning sets and cohorts of learners for example, the simple courtesy of introducing oneself as a human person is seen as unimportant and trivial. I am not a great reader of manuals and operating procedures. Nor am I a great fan of pseudo-psychology or simple models, even though the world of L&D is littered with them.

This week, reader and speaker coach Claire Duffy from Sydney, Australia, shared how a search for examples of women speakers brought her to this blog: I got onto your blog when a 14 year old student was entering a competition where she needed to present a speech by a famous Australian. I don't have examples of great women speakers from Australia to offer, but welcome readers' ideas and suggestions to share with Claire and her trainees. She wanted it to be by a woman. Need I say that no suitable speech could be found.

It’s not supposed to be group reading, it’s supposed to be a presentation. Recently, Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith, a law enforcement trainer, went to the UAE to do some training. She documents her experience in an article on the Police One web site . There are a few lessons we can all learn from her experience.

This group is between, say, 40 and 55. Here’s an interesting question: Is there an optimal age that a company should want the majority of its employees to be? In other words, do people of a certain age make better employees, in general?

Here are 15 tips in no particular order . (1) Keep an analog scrapbook of design examples you find. From time to time, review the contents of your analog examples and reflect on what works (and what doesn’t) and why. This activity is even better in a group where people occasionally come together and share their scrapbook contents with others in a kind of “examples of design show and tell.” (2) Keep a digital scrapbook in the form of an online Kaizen (??) means "improvement" — "kai" (?)

Students were randomly assigned to two groups. One group attended a presentation with traditional bullet-point slides (with the occasional diagram) and the second group attended a presentation with what Chris calls “sparse slides”, which contained the same diagrams, but minimized the amount of text, and broke up the information over several different slides. There was no significant difference between the groups on the multiple choice questions. At last, we have some scientifically rigorous evidence to show that slides full of bullet-points don’t work.
