Colaboration (having multiple people work on a document seamlessly) and cloud computing are what 2010 is going to be all about. While they are really good, starting in June these features are going to be a part of the upcoming Office 2010. Google is all about cloud computing and while DocVerse does not add any new features to its apps directly, what is does do is allow MS Office users to upload their MS documents into the Google cloud and DocVerse is a company Google purchased last week that aims at making it's online Google Apps more appealing to MS Office users.

You get literally, I would say, from an end user perspective, dozens or hundreds of new features. And our experience throughout the beta test program is that everybody finds their own unique set of features to fall in love with. Matt Lauer said that the launch of Windows 7 was the most important launch Microsoft had done in ten years. If that’s true, why’d it suck so much?

Globe-trot as a paperless speaker : Readers of this blog know I'm a fan of using the Amazon Kindle instead of carrying paper or notes when I speak from a text--there's no shuffling noise, no dropped pages and all the advantages of portability and even a variety of type sizes, and you can email your Word or PDF documents to the device. This week, Amazon announced that the larger-format Kindle DX, with a bigger display screen, now offers global wireless , so you can travel the world and download books and documents--including your speeches. The new year seems full of innovations that you can turn to your advantage as a speaker.

Office Button >> Prepare >> Inspect Document - Some of its functions were possible in prevous versions, some were possible using add-ins. To access: Office
The Document Inspector's 'Presentaion Notes' feature solves this problem with a few clicks. Open the Document Inspector (OFFICE BUTTON >> PREPARE >> INSPECT DOCUMENT) and choose the PRESENTATION NOTES option. For presentations that are being distributed many problems have occured with recipients reading through the Presentation/Speaker Notes that someone forgot were a part of the presentation - oops... Run the inspector, click the button to remove any and all notes in the speaker notes area and check the slides to see all is removed! -
So, for our purposes I am using the Soft-Shadow add-in to create an invisible element on a slide to discuss the Inspect Document INVISIBLE ON-SLIDE CONTENT feature. PowerPoint is a great tool for creating presentations, but it has never been particularly good at creating documentation or handouts. The Document Inspector has a new feature which I find most helpful when I know a presentation is going to be printed or converted to PDF. Open the Document Inspector (OFFICE BUTTON >> PREPARE >> INSPECT DOCUMENT) and selct the OFF-SLIDE CONTENT OPTION. The OFF-SLIDE CONTENT tool is a great check for slides that have items outside the slide and will not be included in a printout or PDF. Here is my sample slide - the slide is blank, but an object (circle) is off the slide in the edit area.

You know I'm excited about using the Kindle as a text-carrier for speeches from my previous posts , so I noted that new features of the Kindle 2 include some that may benefit speakers: 20 percent faster "page-turning" -- essential for you to be able to keep your text moving quickly while you speak -- as well as longer battery life, 2G of memory and capacity equivalent to 1,500 books. You also may find useful the "text-to-speech" feature , which allows the Kindle to read any document aloud to you -- for speakers, that means you can listen to another voice read your text so you can devote
