My impression from working in this sewer of intellectualism and integrity called Washington, DC for 13 years is that I seriously doubt ANY of the government web shops are out there looking at what other governments are doing well in designing their sites. USA.gov to me seems a lot like using the Dell web site to buy a laptop (Dell….*shudder*). United States After looking at USA’s Drupal powered Whitehouse website, their actual government website is a huge letdown , it uses dated HTML and awful header graphics.

I spent most of last week at the American Society for Training and Development ( ASTD ) International Conference and Expo (8000+ attendees) here in Washington, DC at the very impressive Walter E. Couple of lessons: the scribe has to be familiar enough with the content to determine what the nuggets are; figure out how to toggle back and forth between the big screen and the laptop screen before the session; recognize that there is a several seconds delay between hitting enter on Tweetchat and having the tweet appear in the stream. It’s either the biggest waste of time and expressly forbidden (as was my experience in how CTAM directed its conference recently in DC www.ctam.com), or it is fully embraced and publicly lauded as in SXSW. I’ve taught at various universities in recent years as a guest lecturer and the feel is very different with students having laptops in front of them open the whole time, etc. Home About Consumer Centric digging. listening.
