Watching only a short portion of either of these videos gives you a good sense of Mary Robinson's voice -- gracious, articulate, authentic, conversational and passionate.

One big downside to the onstage interview (and I've been on both sides of them) is that, at base, it's a conversation between two people with a big crowd of listeners. No one would have bet on this, but by all accounts, yesterday's SXSW keynote by Twitter CEO Ev Williams flopped. Louis Gray sums up what happened succinctly: After thousands of Twittering geeks and quasi-geeks alike had settled in to the packed exhibition hall and overflow rooms to hear the latest updates delivered straight from Twitter's leader, their excitement soon turned to boredom and finally, severe annoyance, as

Keynotes tend to be more conversational and informational because the speaker is invited to educate, and often their income is from the speaking engagement as opposed to trying to generate sales.

good question for speakers, and many of us will be moving our primary speaking platform to the phone, since live meetings are being cut back to save money. Many of the same skills apply on the phone as in a live conversation--paying attention, listening, blocking out distraction, and offering helpful responses. So do we confront people or do we have a conversation and try to learn more about where they're coming from? I received a private message yesterday from a Twitter connection, disagreeing with a point of view I had expressed in one of my "tweets." But instead of starting a dialogue that could have led to some interesting discussion, the person decided to be confrontational and insulting.
