I had a discussion about this with colleague Frank Blanchard , who watched me lead a workshop for scientists on communicating science to public audiences. I can see this being a useful self-coaching process you can use before a conference call or meeting (akin to my recent post on 7 ways to interrupt effectively ), or as you are practicing a big presentation or a major speech. I'm so glad you all asked me to speak to you today, because I think I may have some insights you might find useful about my experiences as a woman in our industry. Being a woman in our industry is like being a vacuum cleaner: It sucks.

George Page's AccuConference blog elaborated on how to regain the audience's attention if you're losing it, building on my post that answered a workshop participant's question. And often, the most exciting content you experience at conferences is not delivered by the keynote speaker. And it's not presented by subject matter experts in the workshops. “Content isn't king. I spent most of last week at the American Society for Training and Development ( ASTD ) International Conference and Expo (8000+ attendees) here in Washington, DC at the very impressive Walter E. month prior to the conference, they set up a LinkedIn group for conference speakers as a forum to ask questions and share ideas/best practices. The 2009 San Francisco Writers Conference held this past weekend at the Mark Hopkins Hotel was a hugh success. loved hearing all the success stories from past conference atendees and was inspired to get home to Write!
