20 tips for better conference speaking ~ 16 February 2009 ~ View from on stage as I’m preparing to speak at An Event Apart New Orleans 2008. Some have a short range of 30 feet or less, while some have a range of up to 150 feet (in some conference rooms or auditoriums, the speaker is nowhere near the computer). Since we've been talking about coming out from behind the lectern , let's talk about coming out from behind the computer . PowerPoint users are frequently seen standing in one place, pushing a button on their computer to advance their slides.

I spent most of last week at the American Society for Training and Development ( ASTD ) International Conference and Expo (8000+ attendees) here in Washington, DC at the very impressive Walter E. month prior to the conference, they set up a LinkedIn group for conference speakers as a forum to ask questions and share ideas/best practices. Once at the conference, the organizers Washington Convention Center . The days were chocked full of interesting sessions, interesting people and interesting observations.

Conference they are probably attached to a laptop or mobile device of some sort. Since (nearly) everyone at this conference would have a laptop–or a smart phone–they could load this chat room and join the discussion right where they were sitting. It worked just as expected–lots of people opened up their laptops to jump into the discussion. Last month Nancy Duarte spoke at Web2.0 Expo and it was a huge success.

That’s because I think it’s much easier for you as a presenter if there’s just one application open on your laptop – rather than having to click between applications during your presentation.
A Seat Apart was developed by Allister Klingensmith literally over night at An Event Apart 2009 conference in Boston. Presenting while people are tweeting is challenging – but also adds a new dimension to the presentation experience for your audience. Gradually tools are being developed to make it easier for you as the presenter to manage the backchannel.
