It felt like having my garage band give a concert next door to U2. If I had my way,  every teacher on the planet would take two courses: First, an acting course, the only star in the academic firmament capable of teaching people how to manipulate their bodies and voices i to project information. So the actor protects his voice by doing exercises to strengthen it, by warming it up before using it on stage and by learning breathing techniques to maximize its projection and tone. Just as a football player or a violinist warms up muscles before engaging them in the game or the concert, so should a speaker warm up the muscles required for speaking before a presentation. Breathing from One of the actor's most precious tools is his voice. Unless he's in a Marcel Marceau retrospective, without his voice he will miss an entire dimension of communicating with the audience.

Last night we saw Rufus Wainwright in concert at small local theater. Again, Rufus made some jokes, one about playing a high school (actually it was a junior high school; the Marjorie Luke Theatre is a recently renovated community performing arts center which was originally built as part of the junior high in 1931 as a Works Progress Administration project, complete with ornate vaulted ceilings, wrought iron chandeliers and plaster cherubs -- and crappy mic stands.). If you think his voice resonates on a CD, you should hear him live, solo, with just his piano or guitar as accompaniment.
I appreciate a few competition reality shows, the ones where people win something based on a practical skill or talent, like American Idol, Project Runway and Top Chef. We saw Rufus Wainwright in concert in March, so I'm still playing a lot of his stuff in my car.
