Magical thinking was made famous when Joan Didion observed in her book by that title how it helped her through her grief after her husband's death. 0160; It's such a common emotional defense because it works.

The Olympic Games shows us young people giving their best, and if they lose, they know how to congratulate the winners, and quickly return to the “C Zone” to visualize their victory next time. The coach asks . . . I have a friend who always turns to the sports page firstbecause he is inspired by people’s accomplishments; the the front page and the rest of the news is often about failures and violence. A heavy dose of “what is wrong with the world.”

And I had him as #1 on our Top Ten Communicators of 2008! So why do I say he needs a communications coach? And this is where he needs a communications coach. Practice in improv and spontaneity skills would be great (not that I expect a U.S. Watch him Tuesday night - he does not yet approach Reagan or Clinton, yet with a little OK, OK, Obama is a great communicator!?! At least that's the general consensus. He doesn't need a new speech writer - actually he has one of the best and that is where his strength is - his words and oratorical skills.

Here's my first post in the 15 Weeks to Step Up Your Speaking program, in which I'll be coaching Stephanie Benoit as she works on her top three priorities--building confidence, making eye contact and connections with the audience, and preparing appropriately (but not overpreparing) for her public presentations. Stephanie has chosen three priorities that may be working together to contribute to and reinforce her fear of public speaking . That's thoughtful on her part, and her choices for this coaching may be the most important factor in her eventual success. We'll find out more as we go through the next 15 weeks, but I've asked her to think more about the "why" behind each of her priorities--why they are issues for her, or what's prompting them.

As Suzuki says, "Without any intentional, fancy way of adjusting yourself, to express yourself as you are is the most important thing. It was certainly not a perfect presentation technically, so one gentleman asked me how I could recommend such an imperfect, "awful" talk as
