Two great first ladies: Lady Bird Johnson , who overcame a powerful fear of public speaking to demonstrate poise and skill speaking before some of the most contentious audiences ever, and Eleanor Roosevelt , who felt pushed into speaking in public, but became a powerhouse communicator. Women labor activists who shared public speaking skills with other women during a major auto-workers' strike in the 1930s, and other Michigan women who spoke out against slavery and for votes for women. And I had him as #1 on our Top Ten Communicators of 2008! So why do I say he needs a communications coach? He doesn't need a new speech writer - actually he has one of the best and that is where his strength is - his words and oratorical skills. And this is where he needs a communications coach. OK, OK, Obama is a great communicator!?! At least that's the general consensus. But oratory is not all there is to communicating, particularly in these desperate times where trust is so important in our leaders.

To this I say: Every audience is an opportunity to improve your skills. Every presentation is an opportunity for you practice your skills, understand audience dynamics, try out new stories, experience different venues, get used to different time frames, grow your strengths, and learn from your mistakes. I spoke to someone yesterday who favors big audiences, like I do. Both of us agreed that big audiences give us lots of energy, which we then feed back to them.
