At the same time, attendance at conventions and meetings is down.

Back in March of 2008, I wrote a blog post about his speech on race in America . If you ignore your feelings about politics, religion etc … and examine the speech strictly from a rhetorical point of view, it was a masterpiece.

America In yesterday’s post , I said that Obama’s speech at Fort Hood was not his best ever, but I didn’t say which speech I thought was his best.

The sweeping grand speechifying by Jack, Bobby, and Ted Kennedy has been replaced by the next generation's conversational rhetoric. 0160; The speech in America, even in such heady settings, has gone from eloquence to an attempt to connect, one human being to another. Question: Will the old-style fire-eating rhetoric of the Southern Church also cool down?

In stark contrast to the 43rd President of the United States of America, President Barack Obama spoke clearly, concisely, and confidently to the millions of people listening to him deliver his inaugural address.
Even though those in attendance and around the world were anxious to hear soaring rhetoric and words of inspiration, Obama’s message was a little more serious. His task was a difficult one. The moments of inspiration were there, but they were always balanced out by the reminder of the obstacles America faces as a nation.

Wendy Koop of Teach for America fell into this trap. Her talk at Washington University offers a false promise by saying she’s there to “talk to you about your choices at this stage of your lives…” Then she delivers example after example culled from the Teach for America archive of marketing stories. And he includes a number of nice rhetorical devices. Commencement season has largely come and gone at universities and colleges around the nation. And, once again, we’re left with the remains of speeches that ran the gamut from wonderful (thank you, Tom Brokaw.)
