Businesses who use old media advertise at us instead of communicating with us. They interrupt us. want to be in a conversation with you, not be a target for advertising. Tags: Advertising Communication Facebook Twitte One of the things I like about social media is that it is getting businesses and people to communicate with each other. Twitter is a great example.

The Geico gecko campaign is an excellent example of effective advertising because it integrates humor with a consistent product benefit message. Nonetheless, it suffers from the same limitations that afflict all advertising:

Storytelling is a key component of effective marketing and often of the very best advertising. If you are Garrison Keillor, you can take a long time to tell a story about Lake Wobegon in which none of us know where you’re headed and are willing to give you as much time as you want to get to the point.
Unless your story is so intrinsically compelling that we will follow along without knowing where you’re headed, you are likely to lose us at least conceptually early on. Just because you put a cute dog in a commercial, you won’t automatically communicate effectively with your customers.

There are few of us who, at at one time or another, have either exaggerated or shaded the truth by either bragging or playing down a story. Skipping the grid: A familiar layout in reports and advertisements is seen here:
What we say may not be an untruth, but we want to emphasize one fact to a certain party, and a different fact to another.
The same bragging or playing down can appear artfully in many types of charts.
