If you’re interested in speaking at events, I have some ideas on how you might get that going. And then a little while later, I was a paid speaker. And now, I’m a decently paid speaker.
Telling a story is, for most people, the easiest of the more advanced opening techniques. I get frustrated at presentation advice which says you have to do something clever or dramatic at the beginning of a presentation to grab your audience’s attention. That’s for three reasons: 1.
You can do this by using a technique called chunking (I’ve written about chunking before as a solution for people who are told they speak too fast) . But it’s a very different technique. When I ask people on our courses how their presentation went they often say “It didn’t flow.” 8221; I ask them to elaborate and they say “I stumbled, I had mind blanks, and I had to start sentences again because they didn’t make sense.”
Olivia Mitchell of the Speaking About Presenting blog sent me this provocative post by Laura Bergells on the Maniactive blog: It notes the backlash against bullet-filled PowerPoint slides, which led to simple art-filled slides. When some people speak, they grip the podium as a way to steady themselves and their speech. In another study, another group of Columbia scientists watched a series of polished professional lecturers and undergraduates speaking, and noticed that both types of speakers rarely came down with a case of the “um, ah and er” when they gestured. Do the words come a little easier when you go hands-free? Editor's note: This launches a new series on The Eloquent Woman blog that will Coyote and Roadrunner were the original action heroes.
