During a session with a client the other day, we talked about the delivery of his company's new employee orientation. We talk a lot about organizing our content, main points, opening and closing, but we rarely talk about how to get from one segment to the next. These are your transitions . It's as important to plan your transitions as it is to plan the rest of your presentation.

As we went through this exercise, her words became more simple. A speech can be more complicated to write and deliver than a presentation - not because it's inherently a more difficult kind of public speaking, but because the speaker perceives it differently. A speech is usually given at a more formal occasion: a wedding, a banquet, a retirement dinner, a conference keynote.

It could be to start exercising or writing down their financial goals. Remember Pareto’s Principle? Where 80% of the results comes from 20% of your effort. Or 80% of your revenue generated by 20% of your customers. This principle works here in public speaking as well.

think that the emphasis on PowerPoints (we'll call them PP for brevity) is because 2008 WAS a great year for great design with the publication of Garr Reynolds' book "Presentation Zen" and Nancy Duarte's "slide:ology" (both still best sellers on Amazon.) then using PP's, (and videos, and exercises, and SHARP's, etc.) With all the recent emphasis on the design of your PowerPoints (Keynote for the Mac), it's time to revisit the fact that your visuals are NOT your presentation. You and your Point of View are the centerpiece.

There is an add-in to do this with PowerPoint 2007 called Slide Tweet , but you need Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio Tools for Office. Or if your presentation includes interactive exercises for the audience take those moments to look at the Twitterstream.
Presenting while people are tweeting is challenging – but also adds a new dimension to the presentation experience for your audience. Gradually tools are being developed to make it easier for you as the presenter to manage the backchannel.
