I owned my last house in 2004. 0160; In fact, at age 64, I published my first novel [link] . 0160; I lucked out and sold it at the near-top of the market. 0160; I haven't owned property since. In fact, I took a vow of poverty which has mutated into a determination to avoid excess materialism.

0160; But around 2004, assignments vanished, I panicked, and I was back. Publish more books, for our own bylines. The rule of thumb seems to be: For every book we publish there are about 4 false starts on our hard drive. If hope could pack a voodoo wallop, 2010 will turn out to be a very good year. 0160; But we writers have to be prepared to identify, leap on, and exploit opportunity.

recovering Catholic [I have my good days and bad days] I recently published a novel in which the dominant and lesser players are Catholics. Full disclosure: In 2004, I did some freelance work for the Diocese of Bridgeport.

also increased my targeted ezine subscribers 100+ a month. In the meantime, I set up my computer files with articles to submit, added new publishing addresses into my book so I could just push a button and send to many thousands of subscribers. There was a time, and it was as recent as 2004 when I was first learning social media, that THE WALL STREET JOURNAL was a career-breaker and a career-maker. 0160; For my own byline I published four.

In 2004, it dawned on me that I couldn't and wouldn't deal with The Establishment any more. 0160; In addition to making a decent living, I will be publishing my first novel this fall. There is a game, sometimes a lucrative one, outside working for The Establishment. 0160; To play it you must be honest.
