While digging around for current research, I came across this 2001 Gallup poll on American Fears . You may recall that I've been trying to track down current and legitimate research on the fear of public speaking. The same tired old statistic "People fear speaking more than they fear death" has been eagerly accepted and repeated as fact, even though the study that is usually quoted is over 30 years old .

In 2008, I was often an audience member where presentation content and design relied almost exclusively on propaganda techniques. You can, too.) I've witnessed the backlash first hand in 2008. suggested that a "middle road" might occur with a swing of the pendulum. In my world, it's not wrong to note trends or ask questions! That's so 2001. In seems that previously, Mark competed in the 2001 World Championships which has since produced 2003 winner Jim Key. Here’s an article I previously wrote on the subject, when I competed in the contest in 2008 - How to win a speech contest even if you lose . The Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking for 2009 is Australian Mark Hunter, with his speech “A sink for a green tomato”. Beyond the accolades, having previously competed in the early rounds of the contest myself the contest is a good way to expand and improve your skills on the area of public speaking.

The overwhelming proliferation of Instant Messaging (IM), text messages, and Twitter has long placed linguists on alert. The seamless incorporation of these media into everyday life and communication is astounding. From 2001 to 2002, text messages leapt from 30 million sent to nearly 1 billion. Records also show that in March 2008, over 3 million Twitter messages (tweets) were posted daily. The world has certainly “shrunk,” but has speech quality diminished as well?
